This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches Bret Harte Books
This collection of short storied gives fascinating insights into who the people of the California gold rush were, and how they interacted. Today's movies had prepared me to expect a lot of gunplay and violence. But there is surprisingly little of that in these stories. Instead, I learned about how people of that time and place related to each other. It wasn't all about unbridled greed, even in a setting that was notorious for that. Also, even though Harte wrote about many people who were barely literate, the vocabulary he uses is so extensive that I made heavy use of the built-in dictionary provided with my Kindle.

The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches Bret Harte Books Reviews
It is WAY below the reading level I expected it to be. I wanted a more modern version of the original but not babified. I can't use this booklet at all with my students - it's WAY below gradee level.
Interesting but not great. Bret Harte was no Mark Twain.
I bought this for my husband as a retiree he has decided to take up reading. he had just finished with the ben king books so I thought I would give him this book by an author I enjoyed. It worked he liked it!
I have read it from cover to cover. Beautiful short stories that win your heart. I enjoyed remembering them from days of English classes.
Too slow and the verbage was too verbose for a wetern, more like victorian writing
Oftentimes these e-books are poorly formatted and difficult to maneuver.
I give this one an 8 out of 10. I could move among the various short stories on my Android phone pretty well. There aren't any mis-spelled words as I recall...
If you've never read the works of Bret Harte you should do yourself a favor and download this. It's pretty striking how our modern ethos evolved from the various streams of tolerance and ignorance flowing through the Old West. The law in mining country was generally a function of common sense and of mob rule. Harte does a great service limning it for us, with humor and an open eye.
At one time Brett Harte was one of the most widely read authors of the short story in America. Somewhere along the line, we Americans lost the appreciation for that uniquely American literary invention-THE SHORT STORY! I can think of few authors
whom I would wholeheartedly recommend to reintroduce the appreciation of the short story to the literary audience then "Brett Harte."
I have read and re-read his works for many years and love every one of them. I hope you will too!
